Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • Making time for short, focused read-aloud sessions in the mother tongue, whether at school, in an ECD centre, or at home, can help children build their vocabulary, develop discipline, and enjoy reading.

Seeing Sibahle, a Grade 1 learner from Amalinde Primary in Dimbaza, Eastern Cape, read the story 'Ubuya nini Tata' in isiXhosa with so much understanding and excitement is truly touching. Her reading ability shows that having books in her first language and support can help a child become a better reader from an early age.

  • Alwande, a Grade 6 learner from Msogwaba, Mpumalanga, says his favourite story is "The Sly Snail and the Seven Wolf Puppies." He was attracted by the title because he likes animals; he especially enjoys reading about animals not found in Msogwaba.

Which children's stories do the children in your home, ECD, or school classroom enjoy the most? In what language do they read them? Share with us in the comments. 😀

  • When was the last time you listened to our beautifully narrated multilingual radio stories on various SABC radio stations?

Every year, Nal’ibali produces a selection of 45 – 52 radio stories which are aired on 13 SABC and 12 independent community radio stations in different languages across the country. Our Nal'ibali radio stories reached an estimated 8 million children through SABC radio stations and 1.4 million via community radio stations in 2024.

  • Nal'ibali continues to celebrate women who are fostering a culture of reading for enjoyment in their communities.

WATCH Dineo Hlobo, an early childhood development practitioner, discuss how Nal'ibali training and reading materials inspired her to establish her own pre-school, Little Innovators Hub, in Ikageng, North West, where she teaches children to read in their own language.By empowering ECD practitioners via training, Nal'ibali lays the groundwork for children to learn to read in their mother tongue at a young age.
